The fort defended the Paro valley from the Tibetan invasion from the north in the ear 17th century. Mount Cholohari (7,320m) can be seen, if the weather is clear. Proceed through the beautiful valley to the clock tower, locally known as Ta-Dzong. Overnight stay in Paro.

Day 2Drive from Paro to Thimpu

We make a hike to the view point of Taktsang monastery. For an extra payment, we can hire horses for this visit. The 2/3 hours uphill hike through villages and pine forests is pleasant. The monastery clings to the huge granite cliff 800 meters above Paro valley. It is believed that the great saint Padmasambhava came in the 7th century on a flying tigress and meditated in a cave for 3 months. The demons were subdued who were trying to stop the spread of Buddhism. The saint converted the Paro valley into Buddhism. During the end of the 17th century a monastery was built on the spot where the saint meditated and now it is a pilgrimage site for every Bhutanese, who desperately desire to visit this place at least once in their life time. In the late afternoon, we drive 2 hours to reach Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan, which is 65 km from Paro. Overnight stay in a hotel in Thimpu.

Day 3Thimpu – Wangduephodrang

In the morning we go sightseeing around Thimpu, including a visit to Memorial Chorten built in the memory of the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck; 15th century Changangkha monastery; and the new Drupthob nunnery. In the afternoon we take a 3 hour drive to Wangduephodrang. Nice views of eastern Himalayan ranges, including the highest mountain in Bhutan Mt. Gangar Punsun 7,520m, can be observed if the weather is clear. The drive further from the pass is all the way downhill dropping to the lower and warmer valley of Lobesa. Overnight stay at a hotel.

In the morning we drive for 45 minutes to Punakha and visit the Punakha Dzong which served as the capital of Bhutan in the past. This remarkable fortress is built between rivers and has survived many glacial floods and fire. Every year during the month of February a process, known as the Punakha Serda, takes place to commemorate the victory over the Tibetans. Now drive 3 hours to Thimpu; and proceed 2 more hours to Paro via visiting the oldest building in Bhutan, the Simtokha Dzong. The building now serves as Budhist University.
