Kanchenjunga Trek is an adrenaline rushing journey in the Himalaya. Covering Kanchenjunga (8,586m), the third highest mountain peak in the world, this north-eastern region of Nepal borders with Sikkim state of India.

Starting from Hile in Dhankuta district, the trek ascends up to Tamor valley along one of the oldest trade routes in the Himalayas. The trail climbs up to high alpine terrain to a camp established high above the Ghunsa village, providing outstanding views of Kanchenjunga massif. It advances through Lapsang La Pass (5,180m), Mirgin and Yalung Glacier to Kanchanjunga Base Camp. The trail is not yet a beaten track, therefore, one needs to be prepared to explore the region and take the experiences as it comes.

Sherpa, Limbu and Rai are the major inhabitants live in small villages scattered throughout the region. You will be rewarded with the magnificent views of the Everest, Makalu and Kanchanjunga towering south face during this trek.

Day 01Arrival in Kathmandu – 1,300m/4264 ft.

Upon arrival at the international airport in Kathmandu (1300M) you will be received by our representative at the arrival gate and will be transferred to your hotel. Overnight at hotel.

Day 02Kathmandu, Patan sightseeing and trekking preparation in Kathmandu (1,300m)

The second morning after your breakfast, we start a guided tour to several of the most historical and spiritual places in Kathmandu valley. The tour covers UNESCO World Heritage Sites including historical Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swoyambhunath (Buddhist Shrine, also called monkey temple), Boudhanath (the Largest Stupa in the World), and Pashupatinath (Hindu’s holiest pilgrimage site).
Patan, is one of the major cities of Nepal and is best known for its rich cultural heritage, in particular its tradition of arts and crafts. After heritage sightseeing, you will meet your trekking guide for briefing to help for final preparation of the trek. Overnight at hotel.

Day 03Fly from Kathmandu (1,300m) to Taplejung, Suketar: (2,320m)

A direct flight from Kathmandu to Taplejung takes you to the starting point of this journey. The one-and-an-half-hour flight by the 16-seat twin-engine Twin Otter to Suketar drops us in the heart of the middle hills. The porters and crew, will be waiting for our arrival. We take an early lunch, while the crew sort the newly arrived trekking gear. In the afternoon we blow out the cobwebs with an easy 2-3 hours along the ridge line to Lali Kharka, a grazing area. Overnight stay at Laki Kharka.

Day 04Trek to Khesewa (2,120m): 5 hrs

After traversing the hillside a short way, we descend to the village of Pakora along the Phawa Khola, crossing a suspension bridge before beginning the steep climb up towards Kunjuri. Lunch will be taken somewhere below Kunjuri. Our afternoon walk takes on up a short distance over the crest of the ridge, then to our campsite at Khesewa.

Day 05Trek to Mamankhe (1,920m): 5 hrs

In the beginning, the trail traverses steep hillside through terraced fields, high above the Kabeli Khola. There are some ups and downs crossing side valleys. We pass the village of Anpan, before descending to cross the Kashawa Khola. We climb again through terraced fields to camp at the village of Mamankhe.

Day 06Trek to Yamphudin (2,080m): 6 hrs

Beginning with an easy climb, the walk to Yamphudin is along track which contours the hillside above the Kabeli khola. The path has several ups and downs as we cross the ridges and stream beds that make up the valley sides. However, the route generally is flat. After lunch by the river we complete the day’s walk to Yamphudin.

Day 07Trek to Chitre (2,962m): 5 hrs

Beyond Yamphudin the trail ascends a steep spur, a gentle introduction to what will come next. Leaving villages behind, we trek through pleasant forest, stopping for lunch in a meadow. By the evening we reach at Chitre.

Day 08Trek to Tornogn (3,010m): 6-7 hrs

We climb a 3-hours of steep ascend to the crest of the Deorali Danda, which passes through dense forests much of the way. From Deorali Danda, the steep descend through beautiful forest continues down into the valley of the Simjua Khola. Across the interesting wooden bridge.

Day 09Trek to Tseram (3,870m): 6 hrs

We follow the river through more beautiful forest, the conifers giving way to rhododendron forest. The valley climbs fairly steeply and as the day progresses. The trail gives us a glimpse of the snow-capped mountains ahead and of the massive snout of Yalung glacier. Just before Tseram the towering heights of Kabru and Rathong peak start to peep over the moraine.

Day 10Trek to Ramche (4,580m): 3 hrs

It is a shorter day’s walk up the final 600 meter to Ramche where the trail to Kanchenjunga south face base camp turns dangerous. The scenery is magnificent as we ascend past snout of the Yalung glaciers and into a series of ablation valleys which give easy walking and good camping. A frozen lake, clear streams and views of Koktang, Rathong and Kabru are the highlights of this stroll. Expect to feel the altitude now.

Day 11Explore around Ramche, Yalung Ri glacier and trek to Oktang (4,730m): 4 hrs

Setting off early, we have our first close encounter with Kanchenjunga. Following the ablation valley round, there is stunning south face of Kanchenjunga and Jannu. We get across the Yalung Ri glacier and continue by a sweeping curve, at Oktang we are suddenly confronted with the southern wall of the mountain. The vast ridge forms a cirque over 15km long, nowhere less than 7,500m high. By late afternoon we return to our guest house.

Day 12Trek to Yalung Ri base camp: (5,400m)

The extended part will take you to the high altitudes. It requires determination and some luck as well. The crossing of high passes requires good weather, and of course, a perfect logistic support. Expect to get acclimatized with the altitude today.

Day 13Trek back to Ramche (4,580m): 5 hrs

Yalung glaciers and a series of ablation valleys give good walking and perfect camping. A frozen lake, clear streams and magnificent views are the highlights of this stroll. Overnight stay in Ramche.

Day 14Trek to Salleri over the Mirgin La (4,480m): 6-7hrs

Starting early in the morning, we trek down the valley, passing the turn off to the high and challenging Labsang La route to Ghunsa and the north side of Kanchenjunga. This pass is rough and dangerous, especially for porters. So we take the southern side of pass, beginning with the Mirgin La. After an initial very steep climb and several false summits, we reach the Mirgin La. Apart from the magnificent Jannu, on the horizon are Makalu, Everest, Lhotse and Chamalang and many other high peaks.

Day 15Trek to Ghunsa (3,475m): 4-6 hrs

In the trail there are four more passes with little descending. It is a high scenic traverse. A short steep descend brings us to Lamba Sumba Kharka. Now the going is easy again down a pleasant forested trail to the village of Ghunsa, Overnight stay at Ghunsa.

Day 16Trek to Kambachen (4,040m): 6 hrs

The trail gradually ascends the south bank of the Ghunsa Khola. Crossing a flood plain emerges on a pasture on the north side of the river. The trail makes a steep climb to a slope from where it crosses a slide; and then descends to Lakepo. a short climb from here to the village of Kambachen. Overnight stay at Kambachen village.

Day 17Exploration / Rest day in Kambachen

Today is spent acclimatizing to high altitude. The time can be used for a short morning hike to explore the area around Kambachen. Good mountain views of peaks near Kanchanjunga, Khubur (6,332m), Phole (6,445m), Nango Ma and the tip of Jannu (7,710m) are magnificent from here.

Day 18Trek to Lhonak (4,790m): 6 hrs

A gradual climb through rocky fields gets us to Ramtang. Then crossing moraines northwest of Kanchanjunga glacier we reach Lhonak. Lhonak is on a sandy plain near a dry lake bed. Water is very scarce in Lhonak and you will need to use only as much as absolutely necessary. Overnight stay at Lhonak.

Day 19Trek to Pang Pema (5,140m): 4 hrs

The main Kanchenjunga peak is visible from Pang Pema. From Lhonam, the trail gradually ascends across the plain but soon gets steeper as it follows the moraine. Pang Pema is at a height of 5,140m. Overnight stay at Pang Pema.

Day 20Explore around Kanchenjunga base came – retrace to Kambachen

In the morning those who would like to take a morning hike up a ridge, north of Pang Pema, it is a climb of 200 to 300 meters and provides a great vantage point with views of Kanchanjunga. As usual, the descend goes faster and you can reach Kambachen the same day.

Day 21Retrace to Ghunsa

We retrace to Ghunsa today passing through magnificent sections of forest. From Ghunsa, an hour down we pass through Phole village. The upper part of this village is inhabited by Tibetan refugees. The second part is the winter village of Ghunsa. Further down is Yangswa, where we stay in a tented camp.

Day 22Trek to Amjilosa (2,460m): 4 hrs

In the beginning, we pass through beautiful forests which opens out to steep, grassy hillsides where Amjilosa is perched. Overnight stay at Amjilosa.

Day 23Trek to Sakathum (1,600m): 5 hrs

The trail in continuously descend. After a short traverse, we begin the steep descend that will take most of the day. We reach the confluence of the Tamur and Ghunsa Khola.

Day 24Trek to Chhiruwa 1,200m) 4 hrs

Less than an hour descending, we cross the Simbu Khola which originates from Kanchenjunga’s south base camp. It is pleasantly warm at these low altitudes. Crossing numerous small streams we reach Chhiruwa.

Day 25Trek to Suketar (2,420m) 4 hours

The villages en route are beautiful. We camp at Phurumba school premises. Traversing in an out of minor valleys, we pass through a succession of picturesque villages on our way to Suketar. We reach Suketar in the late afternoon.

Day 26Fly back to Kathmandu

We take a flight back to Kathmandu. Our guide will transfer you to hotel

Day 27Kathmandu departure or trip extensions by adding optional activities

You have option today to extend your programme. Three are many fun & exciting adventures, white water rafting, wildlife safari in Chitwan national park, Pokhara excursion & paragliding or Transfer from hotel to international airport to board onward journey flight.
