Kathmandu Sightseeing

Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal. In the past, this city was named Kantipur. Here you will find the Living Goddess acknowledging the greetings of devotees from the balcony of her temple residence; Durbar Square with its array of temples overlooked by the Hanuman Dhoka Palace. This whole area reflects the ancient place of Nepali Royalty. Kathmandu Durbar Square is listed by UNESCO as world heritage site.

Swoyambhunath
UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 4 km from the center of Kathmandu city lays this Buddhist Stupa, which is believed to be 2,000 years old. The Stupa is composed of a solid hemisphere of bricks and earth supporting of lofty conical spire capped by a pinnacle of copper gilt. Painted on the four sided base of the spire are the all-seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. This hill demonstrates the mosaic arts of small Chaityas and Pagoda temples.

Pashupatinath
UNESCO World Heritage Site situated 5 km east of Kathmandu, Pashupatinath temple is one of the holiest temples of Hindus. Located amidst a lush green natural setting on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River, the temple built in pagoda style has a tilted roof and richly carved silver doors. Visitors, other than Hindus, are not allowed into the temple, but are allowed to view, take pictures, from the eastern side of the temple, which is at a height, facilitating a good view of the temple and its premises.
Behind the temple is the cremation ground that many Hindus in Kathmandu choose for their funeral ceremony.

Bouddhanath
UNESCO World Heritage site Boudhanath Stupa is located 8 km east of Kathmandu city center, which is one of the biggest Buddhist Stupas in the world. It stands with four pairs of eyes in the four cardinal direction keeping watch for righteous behavior and human prosperity. This Buddhist stupa was built on an octagonal base inset with prayer wheels.
