The Kangchenjunga Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and adventurous trekking journeys, taking you deep into the eastern Himalayas to the base of Mount Kangchenjunga (8,586 m), the third-highest mountain in the world. This trek explores a pristine region near the borders of India and Tibet, offering untouched landscapes, dramatic glaciers, high alpine valleys, and rich ethnic cultures.
The route leads to both the North Base Camp (Pangpema) and South Base Camp (Oktang) of Kangchenjunga, passing through traditional Rai, Limbu, and Tibetan-influenced villages. Due to its long duration, limited infrastructure, and challenging terrain, this trek is best suited for experienced trekkers seeking solitude, wilderness, and a true expedition-style Himalayan adventure.
Operated by Rainbow Adventure & Travel, this 22-day itinerary is carefully designed with proper acclimatization, experienced guides, and full logistical support to ensure safety, comfort, and an unforgettable trekking experience.

Itinerary
Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m | 1–2 hrs)
Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be warmly welcomed by a representative of Rainbow Adventure & Travel and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, take time to rest and recover from your international flight. If you wish, you may explore the lively streets of Thamel, visit local cafés, or simply relax at the hotel. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Nepali welcome dinner and a short briefing about the upcoming trek.
Day 02: Kathmandu Sightseeing & Trek Preparation (1,400m | 4–5 hrs)
Today is dedicated to exploring Kathmandu Valley and preparing for the trek. In the morning, enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, and Patan Durbar Square. These sites showcase Nepal’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
In the afternoon, meet your trekking guide for a detailed trek briefing, covering route information, altitude safety, daily routines, and emergency procedures. Final equipment checks and permit processing are completed today.
Day 03: Fly Kathmandu to Bhadrapur & Drive to Taplejung (1,820m | 8–9 hrs)
Early morning transfer to the domestic airport for your flight to Bhadrapur. After landing, begin a scenic drive through tea plantations, river valleys, and rural settlements toward Taplejung. This long yet beautiful journey offers insight into the lifestyle and landscapes of eastern Nepal.
Day 04: Drive from Taplejung to Shekathum (1,576m | 5–6 hrs)
Today’s drive takes you deeper into the remote Kangchenjunga region. The road follows narrow mountain tracks, rivers, and forested hills, gradually moving away from modern infrastructure. You will feel the true isolation of this trekking region as you arrive at Shekathum, the official starting point of the trek.
Day 05: Trek from Shekathum to Amjilesa (2,400m | 6–7 hrs)
Your first trekking day begins by following the Tamor River, crossing suspension bridges and walking through lush forests and narrow gorges. The trail gradually ascends through small settlements inhabited by local ethnic communities. This gentle start allows your body to adjust naturally to trekking conditions while enjoying peaceful scenery.
Day 06: Trek from Amjilesa to Gyabla (2,730m | 6–7 hrs)
The trail continues through dense bamboo and rhododendron forests with occasional steep climbs. As altitude increases, vegetation changes and the environment becomes cooler and quieter. Gyabla is a small and serene village surrounded by forests, offering a restful overnight stop.
Day 07: Trek from Gyabla to Ghunsa (3,595m | 5–6 hrs)
Today’s trek enters an area strongly influenced by Tibetan culture. Along the trail, you will see prayer flags, mani walls, and small monasteries. Ghunsa is the largest settlement in the region and serves as a major acclimatization stop with better lodge facilities.
Day 08: Acclimatization Day at Ghunsa (3,595m | 3–4 hrs)
This rest day is essential for proper acclimatization. Optional hikes to nearby ridges or monasteries help your body adapt to the altitude while offering excellent views of surrounding peaks. The remainder of the day is spent relaxing, hydrating, and preparing for higher elevations.
Day 09: Trek from Ghunsa to Kambachen (4,050m | 5–6 hrs)
Leaving Ghunsa, the trail follows a glacial river through open alpine terrain. Enjoy stunning views of Mt. Jannu (Kumbhakarna) and surrounding glaciers. The landscape becomes rugged and dramatic as you approach Kambachen.
Day 10: Acclimatization Day at Kambachen (4,050m | 3–5 hrs)
Another important acclimatization day. Optional hikes toward nearby ridges allow gradual altitude gain before returning to Kambachen. This day greatly reduces the risk of altitude sickness before ascending further.
Day 11: Trek from Kambachen to Lhonak (4,756m | 6–7 hrs)
The trail ascends steadily through wide glacial valleys surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. Lhonak is a remote high-altitude settlement offering a true wilderness experience.
Day 12: Trek from Lhonak to Pangpema (North Base Camp) & Back (5,142m | 9–10 hrs)
One of the most spectacular days of the trek. Hike to Pangpema, the North Base Camp of Mt. Kangchenjunga, where you will witness breathtaking close-up views of the massive north face. After spending time at base camp, return to Lhonak.
Day 13: Trek from Lhonak to Ghunsa (3,595m | 9–10 hrs)
A long descent retracing your steps through familiar landscapes. The lower altitude makes walking easier and breathing more comfortable.
Day 14: Trek from Ghunsa to Sele La Camp (4,200m | 6–7 hrs)
Leaving the main valley, the trail climbs into high alpine terrain toward Sele La Camp. The environment becomes increasingly rugged and remote.
Day 15: Trek from Sele La Camp to Cheram via Sele La Pass (4,480m | 9–10 hrs)
Cross the challenging Sele La Pass, rewarded with panoramic Himalayan views. After enjoying the scenery from the pass, descend carefully to Cheram village.
Day 16: Trek from Cheram to Ramche & Hike to Oktang (South Base Camp) (4,730m | 6–7 hrs)
Trek to Ramche and continue to Oktang, the South Base Camp of Kangchenjunga. This area offers dramatic glacier scenery and a completely different perspective of the massif.
Day 17: Trek from Ramche to Torongden (2,995m | 7–8 hrs)
Begin descending from the high mountains into greener valleys. The scenery changes significantly as you move toward lower elevations.
Day 18: Trek from Torongden to Yamphudin (2,870m | 5–6 hrs)
Walk through traditional Limbu villages, terraced farmland, and lush forests. Yamphudin marks the end of the main trekking section.
Day 19: Trek from Yamphudin to Hellok & Drive to Taplejung (2,870m | 5–6 hrs)
A short final trek to Hellok followed by a scenic drive back to Taplejung, officially concluding the trekking journey.
Day 20: Drive to Bhadrapur & Fly to Kathmandu (1,400m | 6–7 hrs)
Drive to Bhadrapur and take a domestic flight back to Kathmandu. Evening free for rest or shopping.
Day 21: Reserve / Contingency Day in Kathmandu (1,400m | — )
A buffer day reserved for weather delays or flight changes, ensuring safety and flexibility.
Day 22: Final Departure from Kathmandu or Trip Extension (1,400m | — )
Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey or extend your trip with optional activities such as jungle safari, white-water rafting, Everest scenic flight, Pokhara sightseeing, or cultural tours.
