The Lower Mustang Trek is a culturally rich and visually dramatic journey into Nepal’s trans-Himalayan region, offering trekkers a rare opportunity to explore an ancient landscape shaped by Tibetan culture, deep river gorges, windswept valleys, and sacred pilgrimage sites. Located in the rain-shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Lower Mustang is known for its dry desert terrain, colorful rock formations, medieval villages, and strong spiritual atmosphere.
This trek follows the historic salt trading route along the Kali Gandaki Gorge—recognized as one of the deepest gorges in the world—gradually leading north into the heart of Mustang. Along the way, trekkers pass through traditional Thakali and Tibetan-influenced settlements such as Ghasa, Tukuche, Kagbeni, and finally reach the holy temple of Muktinath, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Surrounded by towering Himalayan giants including Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and the Annapurna range, the trek offers wide open landscapes, clear mountain views, and deep cultural immersion without extreme physical difficulty.
